Art introduces students to the foundations of visual art through drawing, painting, and mixed media. The course rewards effort, curiosity, and growth, not natural talent or technical perfection, so every student can build real skills and express their own ideas. Along the way, students study influential artists and art movements and learn to talk about art with confidence.
What students will learn
- Foundational visual art concepts and techniques
- Drawing, painting, and mixed media
- Influential artists and major art movements
- How to sketch, analyze, interpret, and evaluate a work of art, practiced in a weekly artist study
- Giving and receiving constructive feedback in a studio critique
- Studio habits: caring for materials and working with intention
Inside the studio
Students keep a sketchbook for weekly artist studies, technique practice, and notes, and complete four to six major projects each semester. Ohana Prep's art studio sits inside the Design Center of the Americas, surrounded by showrooms, interior designers, and the people who make a living from materials, color, and form, so a critique can include a working designer from down the hall.
